[…] Perhaps it is no coincidence that the painter Zurbarán claims apostolic garb for himself in the picture – not necessarily because he wanted to slip into the role of one of the historical apostles, but rather because it is solely because of the rank and sense of mission of his art appropriate official costume. Questioning God, i.e. metaphysics, questioning art and self-questioning thus all fall into one in this work, which manages with two figures in front of a twilight landscape background – again the extremely simple signals the highly complex and the complex. Achieving more was not given to art in Francisco de Zurbarán’s time, perhaps never is.
